What is Scoliosis?
What is Scoliosis?
Scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine which occurs often during a child’s growth spurt just before puberty. Scoliosis can also be hereditary however most causes of scoliosis is unknown. About 3% of adolescents have scoliosis. Although most medical cases of scoliosis are mild, this spine deformity could potentially worsen over time as the child grows. Severe scoliosis can reduce the amount of space within the chest making it difficult to breathe. At worst cases it can prevent daily functioning including, walking, sitting and lying down.
Symptoms of Scoliosis
Uneven shoulders
One shoulder blade that appears more prominent than the other
Uneven waist
One hip higher than the other
In worst cases scoliosis curves can make the spine rotate, twist and also protrude side to side. This can cause the ribs on one side of the body to be visibly sticking out making the body unbalanced.
What causes scoliosis?
Many doctors do not actually know the main cause of scoliosis although it is often seen as hereditary factors. Less common types of scoliosis may be caused by:
Neuromuscular conditions
Birth defects
Injuries or infections of the spine
How does Chiro help with Scoliosis?
Chiropractors can improve the movement and posture for scoliosis patients to prevent further curvature progression. Chiropractic care can also reduce back pain and lessen the symptoms. Chiropractors will help you through adjustments and exercises to speed up the healing process and relax your muscles around the spine. Scoliosis is treatable but it is not curable. Like many spinal diseases it requires ongoing treatment by a medical professional to treat or reduce the pain from Scoliosis.
